5 Year ‘Sustainable North’ Plan Launched
A new green initiative has been launched at the Leeds Digital Festival, which will see the creation of 60 sustainable tech businesses over the next five years. The scheme, titled Sustainable North, will support a diverse range of digital startups in cities such as Leeds and Manchester, The Business Desk reports.
Early-stage and new businesses will receive expert business advice and financial support to enable them to address the most urgent environmental concerns, in areas such as carbon reduction and increasing recycling rates.
Sara Parker, board director at NorthInvest and co-founder of Sustainable North, said: “We want the North of England, with all its skills and ingenuity, to be the natural home for new tech businesses solving sustainability issues, whether they address carbon reduction, recycling or improving health and education.”
She added: “We’re excited to launch Sustainable North and the extra focus we plan to give supporting early-stage sustainability focussed businesses to help them get the funding they need to grow.”
The initiative was launched at the Leeds Digital Festival, which ran during the last week of September, and celebrates the dynamic tech sector in the city. In a survey of participants, 35% said that social purpose, including tackling climate change, had become more important to them since the pandemic.
Stuart Clarke, director at Paceline and co-founder of Sustainable North, said: “In order to meet our global commitments to reduce our carbon footprint, it’s really important that the UK increases the numbers of startups in the sustainable, green and clean tech sectors.”
Digital innovations will play a role in the future of the construction industry, as new technology in the manufacturing of materials allows for more sustainable practices. It will also advance cleaner and greener methods of lighting, heating, and cooling buildings.
