Developers Appointed For £5m York Racecourse Upgrade Project
The architecture and design practice FWP have been appointed to provide project management and design expertise for a £5m upgrade of York Racecourse. Insider Media reports that planning permission for the work was granted in October 2023, and the main contractors Lindum are already on site.
York Racecourse can trace its history back an astonishing 2,000 years, to the days of the Roman occupation of Britain. There is evidence that the first formal races took place in 1530, with the first detailed racing being recorded at Clifton Ings in 1709. However, this site was prone to flooding, and the meets were moved to Knavesmire in 1730.
This is still the site of York Racecourse today. The noted architect John Carr designed and built the first Grandstand in 1754, with the sponsors who paid for its construction entitled to use the stand for the duration of the lease. York is regarded as one of the finest racecourses in Europe and recently won Flat Racecourse of the Year Award.
The new scheme will see further development to improve the Bustardthorpe Stand, which was erected in 1913. A single-storey extension will be replaced with a new building with a refurbished entrance and toilets, and sections of the course will be upgraded.

“Sustainability is a key focus of the project and we’re incorporating features like solar panels, rainwater harvesting and green roofs into the developments.”
Elsewhere, a 20-acre site in Elland, West Yorkshire, has been acquired by Crest Nicholson for the development of over 225 new homes. The size of the properties will range from one to five bedrooms, and the surrounding environment will be improved with new footpaths, recreational facilities, and open green spaces.
Guy Evans, managing director at Crest Nicholson Yorkshire, said: “We are pleased to announce our newest and largest site acquisition in Yorkshire, continuing our mission to deliver high-quality homes in Yorkshire.”
He added: “With work anticipated to start late 2024, the development will have a strong, positive effect on the wider Elland community, providing new jobs, infrastructure and most importantly, much needed high quality homes for local people.”
20% of the new homes will be classed as ‘affordable.’ Work is expected to start later in 2024, with the homes ready for the market in mid 2025.
