Ambitious Expansion Plans Approved For Yorkshire Dales Hotel
A historic hotel in the Yorkshire Dales has been granted approval for an ambitious expansion. Insider Media reports that the Aysgarth Falls Hotel & Palmers Restaurant owners Brook Group have now successfully applied for planning permission for 14-purpose built luxury hotel lodges and additional restaurant space.
The hotel stands on the site of a mediaeval hospice where pilgrims who had returned from the Holy Land were treated for illnesses. The hospice was reportedly run by monks from the brotherhood of the Knights Templar, and the site was chosen for its proximity to the fresh air and clean water of the Yorkshire Dales.
The current building dates back to the 18th century, when it was described as a ‘wayside hostelry’ that was popular with tourists. It has remained in continual use, and until June 2011 it was known as the Palmer Flatt Hotel. It was acquired by the Brook Group two years ago, and they carried out a full refurbishment of the 11 bedrooms, bar, lounge, and restaurant.
Chief executive Jason Brook said: “When we acquired the hotel, the rooms were tired and lacked any recent investment, but the restaurant had a good local reputation for food. We knew that we had found a very special property in a beautiful and unique location, and our aim has always been to elevate the offering more in line with current demand and tastes.”
“Our long-term plans are to offer a retreat-like environment for a wide range of customers, whilst also offering excellent facilities for corporate and international guests.”
“Integral to that plan is the provision of the hotel lodges, which really will place guests at the heart of this spectacular Yorkshire landscape, just a short walk from the celebrated Aysgarth Falls, alongside other local attractions such as Bolton Castle, Wensleydale Creamery, and the Forbidden Corner.”
“Our plans were first submitted at the start of 2023 and have been subjected, quite rightly, to detailed scrutiny by the Yorkshire Dales National Park Planners.”
Elsewhere, York gin maker Hooting Owl Distillery have lodged plans for a new distillery at a vacant site on Rougier Street, the site of the former Society and Lounge Bar which closed in 2020. The new venue would have a visitor area and event space as well as a gin lounge.
Founder DOminic M’Benga said: “This is an exciting time for Hooting Owl as we grow and expand. We do intend to stay true to our roots, producing high-quality, small batch spirits, but the new plans will see us join forces with some of our friends in the industry, including The Curious Cat and the Tipsy Toad, which will also be distilled at the new premises.”
He added: “This is a strategic move for Hooting Owl, York is known for its rich history and thriving food and drink scene. We’re hopeful that the plans will be approved because we’d love to bring our small batch, artisan spirits into the city, not only to expand our Yorkshire business but to attract visitors and generate new jobs.”
