Ambitious Plan For Thousands Of New Homes In North Yorkshire
A new housing strategy is being developed for North Yorkshire that will see thousands more homes built across the region. The Scarborough News reports that the scheme will boost the amount of affordable and social housing, and help to reduce homelessness. It will also provide more accessible housing that meets the needs of an ageing population.
The ambitious new housing strategy has been drawn up for North Yorkshire and will be implemented over the next five years. North Yorkshire Council have drawn up the plans to deliver at least 12,685 new homes, and 4,000 of these will be made available at affordable prices.
North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for housing, Cllr Simon Myers, said: “This is the first housing strategy of the new North Yorkshire Council and outlines our vision for housing across the county, our priorities and the actions we will take.”
He added: “North Yorkshire contains diverse housing markets, with varying housing needs and many challenges, but local government reorganisation has given us a once in a generation opportunity to transform services, drive innovation and improve outcomes for our communities and the people who need the most help.”
“We will take a proactive approach to housing delivery, and we will develop a bold plan to deliver more homes, including more affordable properties over the next five years.”
The council’s existing stock of 8,500 homes will be improved and brought in line with the new standards of energy efficiency and the new scheme will be aligned with the council’s net zero ambitions.
Cllr Myers continued: “We will use the new combined strength of the unitary authority and the advantage of being a stockholding council to unlock greater resources, access funding opportunities and accelerate housing growth and regeneration, ensuring that we deliver sustainably, and develop inclusive places.”

Elsewhere in North Yorkshire, plans for a major upgrade of Rudding Park, a luxury hotel near Harrogate have been approved. The Grade I listed Regency style building is built in 18th century parkland that was once a part of the Forest of Knaresborough. It has been a hotel and leisure facility since the 1970s, and boasts an 18 hole golf course.
An extension known as the Follifoot Wing was added in 2010 to create 40 extra rooms, and a new spa building with a gym was opened in 2017. THe new plans include the demolition of several structures including the golf pavilion to make way for a new country club with a swimming pool and upgraded tennis courts and eating areas.
