Ambitious Plans For Former Humber Theme Park
A £65m redevelopment of a disused theme park in Cleethorpes has been proposed by a consortium of developers, Insider Media reports. A public consultation has been launched on plans to build a holiday and tourism centre, and a supermarket.
The site was formerly occupied by the Pleasure Island family Theme Park, which opened in 1993, as a sister park to Flamingo Land in Malton, North Yorkshire. It was transferred to new ownership in 2010, and was permanently closed in 2016. The contents of the site were auctioned off, and it has stood empty since then.
The new proposals for the 54-acre site include plans to build a 148-bedroom hotel and conference centre, plus 272 holiday lodges, and retail units, a food hall, and a Lidl supermarket. There would also be family ensure facilities, such as a gaming arcade, cycle hire and a fishing lake.
The developers claim that the new holiday complex could generate £17m for the local economy, and provide 200 construction jobs, plus around 440 full time jobs when the site is fully operational. The online consultation, which is led by the consultancy firm Lichfields, will seek the views of local residents and stakeholders.
Jonathan Wallace, senior director at Lichfields, said: “This is a comprehensive redevelopment proposal that will bring an important and well-known local site back into use, allowing several leisure, retail and tourism operators to work closely together across a single scheme.”
He added: “A key focus of the plans is to create a sense of playfulness and fun for people with retro style lodges and other exciting aspects, which also provide a big boost for local tourism and the wider economy.”
“We are consulting with local people, interested parties and stakeholders to showcase the many benefits the project will bring and very much look forward to hearing from them.”
Liam Schofield, Lidl GB’s regional head of property, said: “We are delighted to announce plans to bring a new Lidl supermarket to serve Cleethorpes. The new store will provide the community with greater access to high quality, affordable produce and we hope that as many people as possible are able to participate in this public consultation.”
He added: “We look forward to sharing our plans and receiving feedback from local residents.” The consortium aim to lodge a full planning application by the end of 2022, once the consultation process is completed.
Meanwhile, proposals have been submitted for a new Aldi store near Boston in Lincolnshire. A public consultation has already been carried out, which Adli claim won the support of 65% of local residents. The new supermarket would be located off the Swinehead Road roundabout, if the plans are approved by Boston Borough Council.
If successful, Aldi claim the store would generate 40 new jobs for the area as well as further employment opportunities during the construction phase. Aldi are also planning a further supermarket in the area, located off Fleet Street in Holbeach. The chain has surged in popularity in recent years, as shoppers switch to discount retailers.
