Ambitious Scheme To Redevelop Inner City Area Of Manchester
The inner city area of Manchester that lies between the Mancunian Way and Piccadilly Station is in line for a major £1.7bn redevelopment. The Manchester Evening News (MEN) reports that the plans are set to be approved by Manchester City Council. A public consultation will then be held.
The area encompasses the University of Manchester’s north campus and the project is described as an ‘innovation district’ that will be known as ID Manchester. The development will include a mixture of residential, commercial and educational buildings. There will also be a focus on green spaces and enhancing the biodiversity of the area.
The scheme is expected to take 15 years to complete, and it is claimed that over 10,000 jobs will be created as a result.
Councillor Craig, Labour, said: “Manchester is known across the world for its industrious history, but Manchester’s economy has been transformed over the last two decades as one of the fastest growing in Europe. A growing economy, with people at its heart.”
“The Oxford Road corridor and its environs has been central to Manchester’s innovative spirit for generations – a globally recognised hub for education, innovation and research. The ethos behind ID Manchester continues that tradition, creating opportunities for the city’s emerging specialist sectors in health, advanced materials and biotech to develop and grow.”
“We welcome this level of ambition to diversify and grow our economy – while creating thousands of new jobs alongside pathways to learning and apprenticeships for Manchester people to realise their potential, sharing in the success of the city.”
Innovation districts are popular modes of urban regeneration and development both in Europe and North America. They make use of derelict or underutilised zones in towns and cities. New infrastructure and facilities are created to attract start ups and research and development firms, and other organisations to form mutually useful partnerships.
Lou Cordwell, director at ID Manchester, said: “Over the next 15 years, we have the opportunity to design a whole new district of the city that will establish Manchester as a global leader for applied innovation and drive new skills, ideas and economic growth in both Manchester and the UK.”
