Construction Begins On £30m Science Park
Construction work has commenced on a supercomputing centre at a science and technology park in Cheshire.
Sci-Tech Daresbury hopes that the new £30 million facility, which is part of the £210 Hartree National Centre for Digital Innovation, will help the UK lead the way in innovative artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing technology.
It is a joint project between the UK’s Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) and IBM to gather experts in the field and use their knowledge and experience to develop technology that will provide scientific breakthroughs.
Paul Vernon, head of STFC’s Daresbury Laboratory, said: “Every day there’s incredible research happening right here which has the potential to improve our lives. We remain today as committed as we have ever been to supporting excellent research and providing access to world-class research facilities and expertise to solve real world challenges.”
Last week marked the 60th anniversary of the Daresbury Laboratory, which Mr Vernon described as an “immensely proud moment” for everyone involved in the centre.
The new facility, which will see 60 additional scientists join the team of 130 staff, aims to use the research produced at Daresbury Laboratory to advance technologies.
For example, the Hartree Centre, together with the U K Atomic Energy Authority, recently revealed they are using supercomputing and AI to make fusion energy a viable commercial power source. If successful, it can generate four million times more energy than fossil fuels, does not produce long-term radioactive waste or greenhouse gases, is virtually unlimited and is intrinsically safe.
Sci-Tech Daresbury currently has more than 150 technology companies based on its site, including IBM Research, Croda and Hitachi Hi-Tech Europe.
