Consultation To Launch For Transformative Stockport Plans
The first consultation is set to launch on a major redevelopment project to the west of Stockport town centre. Insider Media reports that the scheme, known as Stockport 8, is one of the largest town centre regeneration projects in the UK.
The north west town lies just 10 miles south of Manchester city centre, but it has long been neglected and in recent years many of the major shops have closed, including the large Debenhams department store and British Home Stores.
There has been a realisation that changing shopping patterns mean that the town centre requires a fundamental redesign if it is not to descend into terminal decline. The Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC) have responded with a masterplan that encompasses some 130-acres and will see investment of £1bn.
The £250m Stockport 8 scheme, situated next to the iconic railway viaduct, is a part of the wider plans. It will see the creation of a new mixed-use neighbourhood with up to 1,200 new homes, plus open green spaces and developments for independent businesses. There will be improved transport links with direct pedestrian routes to the town centre.
Eamonn Boylan, interim chair of Stockport MDC, said: “English Cities Fund’s considerable emphasis on a robust and collaborative public consultation and community engagement programme in its proposal for Stockport 8 was one of a number of reasons we knew they were the right partner for the largest site within the regeneration masterplan.”
She added: “That is why this first milestone in the community conversation is a significant one.”
“Our ambition for the site and for the wider regeneration district, has always been one that best serves the needs of local people, and this process will enable us to best achieve this ambition, and to move another step closer to building the most sustainable and liveable town centre, not only in the region but in the UK.”
Phil Mayall from the English Cities Fund – a joint venture between Homes England, Muse and Legal & General, said: “This will be a connected, fully walkable neighbourhood with a diverse mix of homes, places for local businesses to thrive and green outdoor spaces.”
He added: “This area was once a successful residential community, breathing new life into it will be fantastic for Stockport and enable us to reconnect surrounding communities with the town centre.”
“We want this to be a place that’s distinctly Stockport and that celebrates the rich history of the area, so we’ll be out speaking to the local community in the new year to get their feedback.”
Some of the funding for the scheme will be supplied by the English Cities Fund, who are working in partnership with the MDC to deliver the project as part of the government’s Levelling Up agenda.
