Detailed Plans For New Multi Media Centre In Wigan Approved
A planning application for a multi-function cinema and leisure centre in Wigan has been approved. Insider Media reports that the detailed plans put forward by developer Cityheart include a 700-seat cinema, a multi-lane bowling alley, a climbing wall, and other leisure facilities.
The development, known as a multi media centre (MMC), is a part of the wider Galleries redevelopment scheme in Wigan. This is a scheme that has been progressing since 2021, with Cityheart working in partnership with Wigan Council. There will eventually be 483 new homes at the site and a new public events space with hospitality facilities.
Warren Taylor, development director at Cityheart, said: “The MMC is a key element of the wider Galleries redevelopment scheme and is central to the realisation of our vision to create a thriving mixed-use, town centre neighbourhood where people can spend time relaxing with family and friends.”
He added: “The MMC will help boost the local economy by drawing people into the town centre from across the region and will attract people of all ages who want to live in the town centre.
“Providing great leisure facilities will in turn help us secure the best operators and food and drink brands and we look forward to starting to announce some of those additional tenants later this year.”
In line with many town centres across the country, Wigan is focussing redevelopment plans on mixed-use environments where people can live, work, shop, and spend their leisure time with a reduced reliance on car ownership.
Cllr David Molyneux, leader of Wigan Council, said: “This is another really exciting milestone in the redevelopment of the Galleries. The demolition works are well underway, and this planning permission sets out what we are planning to build, delivering an exciting and vibrant redevelopment in the heart of our town centre.
He added: “This approval today sets out how this redevelopment will look and feel, bringing this inspiring future for our town centre to life.”
A similar approach to redevelopment is underway at the north west town of Oldham. Insider Media reports that Oldham Council will work with Placemaker Muse for a multimillion pound redevelopment of the town centre. 2000 new homes will be built to create a sustainable community over a long-term timeframe.
Cllr Arooj Shah said: “These new homes will create new communities right in the heart of Oldham; which is a brilliant opportunity not just for the Oldhamers who will get the chance to live there, but also for people across the borough who can enjoy greener, more attractive, and more enjoyable places to shop, eat, drink and spend their leisure time.”
He added: “I know today’s announcement will also be welcomed by our fantastic local businesses, who will soon be seeing more and more people spending time in our town centre throughout the day and into the evenings, as new communities move in, settle, and raise their families.”
