Green Light Given For 500 Build-to-Rent Apartments In Leeds
Developers Glenbrook have had plans approved for two residential developments in Leeds city centre. Insider Media reports that the Whitehall Riverside scheme will provide 500 new build-to-rent apartments across two blocks of 16 and 19 storeys each. They are part of a wider £280m redevelopment of the area next to the River Aire off Whitehall Road.
Danny Roberts, senior development manager at Glenbrook, said: “This decision to grant planning consent for the residential element of Whitehall Riverside will unlock the delivery of the wider masterplan.”
“Whitehall Riverside will be a premier, highly sustainable development where people will want to come and spend time both now and in decades to come. The design has been carefully considered to create a resilient scheme which is embedded in its surroundings and will encourage an active community.”
The designs include plans for a terraced garden, and lawned areas overlooking the river, with seating and children’s play areas. Extra planting will be carried out to improve the biodiversity of the area, and new cycling routes will be created.
Craig Burrow, development director at TCS, said: “We are delighted that Glenbrook have secured planning consent for the next phase of development at our flagship Whitehall Riverside scheme.”
He added: “High quality residential accommodation is a key component to the delivery of this mixed-use waterfront neighbourhood and we are hopeful of securing further planning consents for the commercial elements and wider masterplan in the coming months.”
Tony O’Brien, partner at Sheppard Robson, added: “Whilst designing this new residential community, wellness was a priority. Green spaces provide areas to relax in the form of terraced gardens within the buildings or through the surrounding new public riverside park, which provides a new active ground floor to the River Aire.”
“Sustainability, through its drive for reduced carbon emissions, has also been at the forefront of the design through its thermal performance, heating and low carbon energy approach.” Construction is expected to commence in early 2023, with a completion date of 2025.
Meanwhile, plans have also been approved for a 400-bedroom student accommodation block in central Leeds, Insider Media reports. The scheme will involve demolishing an existing office building on Regent Street in the city centre, and the construction of an 11-storey block for student accommodation.
A planning officer’s report accompanying the decision said: ” The site is within the city centre and currently represents an inefficient use of land. The proposal offers a significant opportunity to regenerate a key site, deliver purpose-built student housing and contribute to the overall regeneration and place-making to this area of the city centre.”
The development would include communal spaces for use of all students, such as meeting rooms, study zones, a cinema room, and a laundrette. There will also be landscaped green areas with seating, and nine private roof terraces. The development team includes a consortium of architects, landscape designers, consultants, and transport planners.
