Growing Interest In Greener Concrete Identified

There appears to be a growing appetite for low emission concrete and other greener alternatives among some of the biggest names in the construction industry, with almost 20 firms now having signed up to the ConcreteZero initiative.

Run by not-for-profit organisation Climate Group, the pledge sees signatories committing to using 30 per cent emission concrete by 2025 and 50 per cent by the year 2030, Building reports.

Launched in partnership with the World Green Building Council and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, the scheme has just seen 17 new firms sign up, including Laing O’Rourke, Mace, Canary Wharf Group and Byrne Brothers.

Pledge signatories also commit to measure and report on any and all carbon emissions associated with the concrete they use – important given that production of the building material contributes eight per cent of global annual carbon emissions.

Head of industry at Climate Group Jen Carson was quoted by the news source as saying: “ConcreteZero is signalling to the industry that the biggest buyers want the industry to innovate and act now on emissions.

“Concrete and steel emit as much as all road transport globally, and demand is going up. We won’t address the climate crisis without big bold measures on industry.”

Other signatories include Joseph Homes, Grosvenor, The Carey Group, Buro Happold, Skanska UK, Thornton Tomasetti and Wilmott Dixon.

Here at Cheges Concrete, sustainable construction is at the heart of all we do. We actively work towards the reduction of emissions that result from the manufacturing processes of cement by using supplementary cement replacements and aim at achieving zero waste on cement, aggregates and water.
