Historic West Yorkshire Mill To Be Redeveloped For Housing
Greenside Mill in Skelmanthorpe, Kirklees, is to be redeveloped into a residential estate of 46 homes. Insider Media reports that Lovell Partnerships will work with Dudley Consulting Engineers on the 4.6 acre site.
The textile mill was originally built in 1770 and until 2006 it was occupied by Dawson’s Fabrics. Since then the mill has remained vacant and is in a state of disrepair. Planning permission has been granted to demolish the mill to allow for residential redevelopment.
The new dwellings will comprise a mixture of detached, semi-detached, and terraces with some variation in the design type. Each home will have off-road parking and a rear garden, and will be clad with artificial stone.
Peter Dixon, director at Dudleys, said: “Extensive evaluations were required to help secure planning consent for new development proposals, where past attempts had failed. The site is bounded to the north by the Whistlestop Valley family railway visitor attraction and there is an 18-metre level difference from one side of the site to the other.
“With the planning desire to maximise development potential, we had to overcome significant technical challenges to adequately address the level changes.”
“Given the derelict nature of the existing buildings and the relic materials within, we needed to undertake initial building safety surveys to inform of any dangerous areas and facilitate surveys required, most notably for the heritage record of the relatively untouched building interior and contents.”
Meanwhile, the Castle Howard Estate have lodged plans for the development of 26 new homes at the Balk site, for a mixture of rented and tenured properties. The proposals are part of a wider long-term strategy to preserve and enhance the estate near Malton in North Yorkshire.
Jasper Hasell, the Castle Howard Estate chief executive, said: “It is hugely important that the plans we have submitted for the Balk site demonstrate our long-term commitment to purposeful development and the key themes laid out in our masterplan.”

The 145-room stately home sits in 9,000 acres of grounds and much of it is open to the public, despite it still being the formal residence of a branch of the Howard family. It is estimated that the Grade I and II listed structures are in need of £50m of restoration work.
The estate management announced its ‘Purposeful Development Vision’ in 2022, which sets out plans to provide sustainable and affordable housing, enrich the local community and create a national centre of excellence for training in traditional craftsmanship skills.
