New Housing Development For East Leeds
A new housing development of almost 150 homes has been given approval to go ahead, Insider Media reports. The 16-acre plot was sold by Network Rail and Leeds City Council to Gleeson Homes, who will build 147 houses on the brownfield site.
Adam Layhe, Gleeson’s regional managing director for West Yorkshire, said: “After the great success of our Cartmell Beck development, we are thrilled to be returning to Halton Moor to deliver more affordable, quality homes. Waterloo Sidings will provide much needed residential development in the area and showcases our commitment to the region.”
He added: “We are dedicated to playing our part in ensuring that the housing market better serves first-time buyers, as well as families on low to average incomes, making home ownership a reality.”
Gleeson will also invest up to £500,000 in improving the local community infrastructure, including upgraded bus stops, residential travel plans, and off-site biodiversity.
Meanwhile, the Leeds Innovation Arc has received another boost after being selected as the location for a new centre of innovation for clinical diagnostics and medical technology. The National Measurement Laboratory (NML) has chosen Leeds as the site for its Northern Cell Metrology Hub, Insider Media reports.
Professor Julian Braybrook, UK Government chemist and director of science and partnerships of National Laboratories, LGC, said: “Cells provide the structure and function for all living things. However, they are particularly complex to characterise robustly.”
He added: “Whilst the partnership coming together through this hub represents significant progress in our collaboration, I most look forward to our working together to develop new internationally leading approaches that support the greater understanding of biological measurement.”
The Leeds Innovation Arc is a neighbourhood formed around the city’s main universities and hospitals, and will build collaborations with the private sector to share knowledge and expertise. It is intended to create an inclusive community, where people will live, work, and socialise.
Dr Martin Stow, chair and director at Nexus, said: “This is yet another huge accolade for Leeds City Region as a centre of excellence and innovation in healthcare and life sciences.”
“As part of the Leeds Innovation Arc – the innovation neighbourhoods formed around our universities and the proposed new adult and children’s hospitals in the city – the new hub confirms Leeds’ status as a welcoming and thriving location for businesses and organisations which have a positive impact on people’s health and society’s wellbeing.”
Professor Nick Plant, deputy vice-chancellor for research and innovation at the University of Leeds, added: “This partnership is the start of an exciting long-term collaboration between the University of Leeds, Nexus and the NML, further developing our reputation as a national hub for medical technology innovation.”
We will be working closely with the NML, sharing vital knowledge and equipment through our Cellular Biology specialists at the University’s Astbury Centre.”
The hub was officially launched at the University of Leeds on March 31.
