New Marine Lakes Conference And Events Centre For Southport
Planning consent has been given for a £73m conference and events centre in Southport. The Marine Lakes Events Centre will be constructed on the site of the former Southport Theatre and Convention Centre that closed in 2020, and it is expected to help revitalise the seaside town.
Lancashire Live reports that funding for the project has been awarded by the Department for Levelling up, Housing and Communities. Southport has received £33m of funding from the scheme, and a further £20m of combined authority funding has been secured.
The events centre will be constructed adjacent to the Marine Lake and will include a 1,200 capacity theatre and a 2,400 capacity conference centre. There will also be office and retail space, and a cafe and food and drink outlets.
Stephen Watson, Sefton Council’s executive director of place, said: “The Marine Lake Events Centre, together with the Light Fantastic, is forecast to attract more than half a million additional visitors to Southport year on year and generating an annual £18 million for the local economy.”
“It’s a hugely transformational project designed to boost the local economy, create new job opportunities and bring thousands of extra visitors to our beautiful Borough each year.”
“This new Events Centre supports our strategic objectives of providing more reasons to visit, to stay, to stay longer, and to do so all year round – all of which support the creation of quality employment and career opportunities in the sector.”
Derek McKenzie, Sefton Council’s chief planning officer, added: “This is one of many fantastic examples of collaborative and dedicated working between Sefton’s Planning Department, an applicant, and multiple internal and external consultees.”
“This pre-application support has undoubtedly been a vital factor in ensuring the approval of this development. I am pleased that the committee were able to recognise this and we look forward to seeing the Marine Lake Events Centre and Water & Lights Show in all its glory once completed.”
Meanwhile, a new retail development by the Kop Stand near Liverpool’s Anfield Stadium has been given the green light. The £4 million scheme will see the construction of nine retail units and a 33-space car park on a vacant plot near Venmore Street and Walton Breck Road. The developers are Priority Space.
Adam Richardson, director of Priority Space, said: “We’re proud to be delivering these new retail units to Anfield, as they form one small part of a much wider new vision to transform the urban landscape around the football ground.
“High Street renewal is identified as a key priority in this scheme and we look forward to seeing these new shops play a key role in providing improved community facilities for local residents and football fans alike.”
The development is part of the wider regeneration of the Anfield area of Liverpool. There is already a housing development underway which has already delivered over 600 new homes and a new school and shops.
