Plans For Major Expansion At Greater Manchester Hospital
A proposal has been submitted for a four-storey extension to the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary (RAEI) in Wigan. The Manchester Evening News (MEN) reports that the plans to expand the endoscopy unit have been put forward to Wigan Council by Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust (WWL). The RAEI occupies a Grade II listed building that was constructed between 1866 to 1872, and was opened by Their Royal Highnesses The Prince and Princess of Wales on June 4th 1873. It was designed by Thomas Worthington of Manchester and is constructed of red brick with sandstone dressings. To the rear of the two-storey building are kitchen gardens. The extension would be adjoined to the north face of the building and would provide extra space for endoscopy rooms, recovery areas, offices, storage space, and waiting areas. The RAEI is the main district general hospital for the Wigan borough, which comprises about 326,000 people. The planning statement said: “The proposed Endoscopy extension at RAEI aims to improve and enhance user experience, through the relocation of the Endoscopy rooms in order to create better working conditions. It continued: “The scheme will result in the delivery of segregated changing rooms which are also located alongside the Endoscopy facilities, which will enable the Trust to gain JAG (Joint Advisory Group) accreditation.” “Obtaining JAG accreditation is a primary driver behind the proposals, alongside the need to relocate the existing Endoscopy rooms to facilitate the future delivery of Phase 5, which is a further extension project to the north of the infirmary, and to improve the current public and patient flow on Level 01.” Elsewhere, the MEN reports that plans for a significant expansion of Bury market are set to be approved. Existing buildings will be demolished at the Murray Road site to create a large new multipurpose building. The brick and timber building will have a canopy extension to cover the existing outdoor market. The report states: “The proposed development was successful in securing funding for this project from the Levelling Up fund to support improvements at Bury Market, the development of a new flexi hall and enhanced public realm improvements. “This scheme forms part of wider plans to transform and regenerate the town centre, which include a new transport interchange and a redeveloped Mill Gate centre. “It is recognised that the market plays a vital role for local customers and traders, while also drawing visitors from afar. “While the proposed development would not be a retail use, it would complement the market and the surrounding retail units by increasing footfall. through diversification. “As such, the proposed development would not harm the existing retail offer and would enhance the market facilities.” According to the MEN, the new space will be used for conferencing and events, indoor sports, weddings, parties, and exhibitions.
