Plans Unveiled For State Of The Art Stockport Fire Station
A planning application for the total redevelopment of Stockport fire station is expected to be submitted shortly, after details of the project were revealed for the first time. The Manchester Evening News reports that the existing station on King Street West, close to the town centre, will be completely demolished and rebuilt.
Initially the fire service planned to close the station altogether and amalgamate it with Reddish fire station. However, following the extensive renovation work that has been completed around the town centre, a suitable affordable site was unable to be sourced.
Now the decision has been made to rebuild both of the existing fire stations, at a cost of £6 million. The new Stockport station will be a two storey ‘state of the art’ building with high energy efficiency standards. Current levels of services to the local community will be maintained, and the operational room will be available for local groups to use.
Chief Fire Officer Dave Russel said: “This is a chance for residents and businesses in Stockport to tell us their priorities for the future of their community fire station.”
He added: “Every day our firefighters go to work right in the heart of the communities that we serve, so we have a responsibility to ensure that those facilities are of the highest quality and support crews to respond rapidly and professionally to a wide variety of incidents.”
“We had really positive engagement from local communities in Blackley and Whitefield when we outlined the first phase of fire station rebuilds in our redevelopment programme, and their feedback has helped shape plans in those places. I would encourage anyone in Stockport to get involved and tell us what you want to see from this major investment in our capabilities.”
Deputy Mayor of Greater Manchester Kate Green said: “People across Greater Manchester deserve the very best service that our firefighters can deliver, and these plans are all about giving them the facilities and the resources to get on with the job of protecting communities in Stockport.”
She added: “Our £38m Estates Strategy outlines how we’re investing in new stations to modernise our operations across the city region and deliver additional benefits, like cutting carbon emissions and offering new spaces for community engagement and training.”
Meanwhile, local planners in Prestwich are looking for sources of inspiration for the £100m redevelopment of the town centre. Following a public consultation, The Manchester Evening News reports that potential role models from other successfully redeveloped areas of the region include Altrincham, Didsbury, Knutsford, and Chorlton.
The planning document stated: “We need a phasing strategy that allows businesses to operate during demolition and construction; deliver temporary business accommodation, and minimise disruption for local businesses.”
Feedback from the consultation also included requests to conserve the original character and heritage of the existing architectural features, and to build more housing that is accessible for older and less mobile people, affordable and has dedicated resident parking spaces.
