Proposal For Sheffield’s Tallest Tower Set To Be Approved
A proposal for the construction of a 40-storey tower in Sheffield is set to be approved shortly. Insider Media reports that planning permission was originally granted to developers Oppidan Life and SFGE Properties in December 2020 for a 39-storey tower on a city centre site that was previously occupied by Primark.
The developers are now seeking full planning permission to demolish an existing building and construct a 40-storey residential tower, which would be one of the tallest buildings in Yorkshire. The application to Sheffield City Council has been recommended for approval.
The report said: “The proposal accords with the aims of the City Centre Strategic Vision, which demonstrates that a high density, residential-led, mixed use development is appropriate and the area is ideally situated for a major landmark proposal to act as a catalyst to regeneration, especially given its public transport links and gateway location.”
“The site occupies a prominent corner plot at a major city centre node and is an appropriate location for a tall building. The proposed 40-storey contemporary tower is of high architectural design quality. The massing would be broken up into appropriate components, which add interest, ground the development and creating an elegant structure in the skyline.”
The new development would create 428 co-living units and 33 studio apartments, plus work and leisure facilities and storage areas. Currently, Sheffield’s tallest building is St Paul’s Tower, which is 32 storeys high.
Elsewhere, plans are progressing for a new home for Sheffield FC, who were formed in 1857 and are the world’s oldest football club. Their current stadium at Dronfield is known as the Home of Football and has a capacity of just over 2,000. The new stadium will be located at the Sheffield Transport Sports Club site at Meadowhead, and will have a capacity of 5,000.
The new stadium will be a joint venture with Sheffield Eagles and it is hoped that it can also serve as a tourist attraction for both football fans and rugby league fans.
Richard Tims, chairman of Sheffield FC, said: “We are pleased to announce our vision for the future: a new stadium back in the Steel City, a joint venture with Sheffield Eagles and a world-class facility, which will benefit the whole community.”
He added: “Following years of discussions, we are finally starting to see our plans really gathering pace and have a fantastic project team who are totally committed to making our supporters’ dreams turn into reality.”
“This will be somewhere to which the football’s three billion fans can make a pilgrimage and pay homage to the city which gave the world the beautiful game as well as a venue for the local community to utilise and enjoy a variety of sports.”
The new stadium would occupy an 18.7 acre site and would include an indoor multi-purpose sports hall with a seating capacity of 540 people, plus two youth-sized grass pitches and a carpark with capacity for 458 cars and seven coaches.
