University Of Manchester To Redevelop Student Accommodation
The University of Manchester has announced plans to redevelop student accommodation on its Fallowfield campus. In a recent press release, the scheme is described as a major redevelopment to provide high quality accommodation and student socialising spaces. A public consultation has been launched to gather local feedback.
Existing halls of residence at Owens Park, Oak House and Woolton Hall will be replaced with 3,300 new study bedrooms, adding 950 to the current amount. Owens Park tower is already disused and will be fully demolished. Preparation work will start this summer with a view to obtaining full planning permission.
Dr Simon Merrywest, Director for the Student Experience, University of Manchester said: “The proposals for the redevelopment of this area of the Fallowfield campus will strengthen the University’s ability to offer a world-class, supportive student experience in well-located, good value, quality accommodation.”
He added: “This redevelopment provides an opportunity to widen the choice and supply of student bedrooms whilst ensuring they are fulfilling the requirements of future students studying at the University.”
“Through creating these welcoming and inclusive spaces, it helps create a positive sense of place for our students as they live, learn and thrive within the surrounding community.”
Elsewhere, the planning and highways committee at Manchester City Council have approved plans for 1,014 student bedrooms to be created on First Street, an up and coming neighbourhood close to the city centre.
Place Northwest reports that the Dominus Group and Whitbread will go ahead with plans for a 37-storey student accommodation block, alongside a 13 storey office building. The student block will also have 3,000 sq ft of retail space on the ground floor.
Jay Ahluwalia, principal director at Dominus Real Estate, said: “We are pleased to be working in partnership with Whitbread to create a mixed-use scheme that will provide an attractive, sustainable and well-connected hub for work, study, and living.
He continued: “Our aim is to provide a huge boost to Manchester’s Southern Gateway, contributing to the continued regeneration of the First Street area”.
“Our One Medlock Street scheme will bring high-quality and flexible Grade A offices, much-needed student housing at a location supported by the City Council, and a better street-level experience for all.”
The existing Premier Inn will be demolished to make way for the new development, which is known as One Medlock. Furthermore, new landscaping will be carried out, including a pocket park, a linear rain garden, and a public artwork.
During the construction phase, the developers claim that 305 full time jobs will be created, while the new office block could potentially support 2,200 workers.
Several other new schemes were approved at the recent planning meeting, including a new Lidl store for Chorlton on Mauldeth Road West, a new primary school with capacity for 420 pupils in Cheetham Hill including a community sports pitch, and further student bedrooms on Carmoor Road.
