Development Team Sought For Manchester City Centre Project
The city of Manchester is booming thanks to the extensive regeneration schemes that have taken place since the turn of the century. Many areas that were afflicted by post-industrial decline have now been successfully redeveloped, including Castlefield and large areas of land around Piccadilly Station.
Manchester now has a range of exciting up and coming areas that have been purpose -built to provide a mixture of residential and commercial space, often with attractive open green areas and fashionable bars and restaurants. This has led to a 9.7% increase in the city population over the past decade.
The latest in a long line of projects is set to get underway as the Council have announced they are looking for a development team for Holt Town, an area that lies between Ancoats and New Islington in the city centre. This is currently an under-utilised 30-hectare area of brownfield land, presenting a prime regeneration and investment opportunity.
The Council is seeking to establish a Neighbourhood Development Framework (NDF) that will eventually link the city centre with the east of the city. There will be a particular emphasis on integrating digital infrastructure into the scheme to ensure maximum digital inclusion and excellent links to public services.
Cllr Bev Craig, Leader of Manchester City Council, said: “Holt Town represents one of the biggest and most exciting opportunities to implement our vision for communities that deliver sustainable economic growth, new jobs, new affordable housing and inclusive digital technologies.”
“We have a large area of brownfield land brimming with potential and sat between two of our city’s key areas of economic growth. Holt Town should be bold and innovative – a new and vibrant city centre community that supports our residents to thrive.”

Elsewhere, Shaw on the outskirts of the city is set to see over 100 new homes built on the site of a former distribution centre. The Manchester Evening News reports that councillors in Oldham have approved plans for 130 new homes, 26 of which will be sold at 80% of the market value to make them affordable to local families.
As part of the site preparation, three one-hundred year old mills have been demolished, leading to complaints from local residents about dust and noise pollution. New open green spaces are set to be created through the de-culverting of the River Beal, with extra pedestrian and cycle routes and tree planting schemes.
