Plans For 360 Student Apartments In Leeds Cultural Quarter
A planning application for 360 new student apartments has been submitted to Leeds City Council. Insider Media reports that Caddick Group are behind the proposals, which is a part of the wider SOYO development. The latest and final phase will see the construction of an eight storey U-shaped building.
If the planning application is successful, the scheme will see 228 individual studios and 132 bedrooms in six-bedroom cluster flats delivered. The facilities will be purpose built for student use, with communal dining areas, gaming areas, and a cinema and gym. The plans, known as Block A, are currently subject to a public consultation.
A planning statement submitted as part of the application said: “The proposed development will deliver purpose-built student accommodation in an ideal location, taking pressure off the need for students to rent private housing elsewhere in Leeds.”
“The design of the scheme is considered to be in line with the designs of the wider SoYo development providing a high-quality scheme which will provide an elegant, attractive building for the site that compliments and follows the wider design language of the SoYo development, whilst also improving the quality of the public realm.”
SOYO is an ambitious £300m project to create a new neighbourhood to the south of York Road in the heart of Leeds’ cultural district. It’s a mixed use development with homes, shops, restaurants, and leisure facilities, as well as substantial new green spaces.
Elsewhere in Leeds, plans for a new hotel development at Leeds Kirkgate Market have been submitted. Currently the site on George Street is occupied by empty retail units. These would be demolished to make way for a new six-storey hotel with 140 rooms plus a bar and restaurant.
The ground floor of the building will be used for retail space and a council-run gym. Kirkgate market has already seen significant investment in recent years, and is now a thriving area of the city with 400,000 visitors a month.
Councillor Jonathan Pryor, Leeds City Council’s executive member for economy, culture and education, said:
“We’re determined to do everything we can to deliver a bright and busy future for Leeds Kirkgate Market while also driving forward the regeneration of the surrounding area. These hotel proposals are designed to help us achieve that twin aim, and we have been encouraged by the response we have had to them over the last few months.”
“The submission of the planning application marks another important step in a process that we hope will have a positive and transformative effect on George Street and the rest of the eastern side of our fantastic city centre.”
Kirkgate Market is one of the largest indoor markets in Leeds, housed in a landmark Grade I listed building since 1857. It is a tourist destination with a huge selection of fashion, food and drink, hardware, homewares and more. It has a new events space that hosts live music, exhibitions, fashion shows, and fairs and festivals.
